Characterization is the way author shares information about their characters and describe them to the reader. There are two ways to do this:
Direct characterization is when the author tells the reader what the personality of the character is, for example: "Hank has always been very shy and kept to himself."
Indirect characterization is when the author describes a character through speech, thoughts or actions. For example "Hank hid away from the other student in class and didn't have many friends." By reading that sentence the reader can probably tell that Hank is not a people person and is shy. I described certain traits about Hank, letting the readers know more about him, without being direct and just saying "Hank is very shy and does not like other people very much."

The point of characterization is to make a character that is interesting, different, unique, and individual. Good characterization gives readers a good sense of the characters' personalities and complexities. It makes characters vivid, alive and believable. Characterization is very important in stories. It keeps the readers interested. Someone may also feel a special connection with a character and that will make them want to continue reading.
A character arc is the status of a character as it unfolds throughout a narrative. A character begins the narrative with certain viewpoints that change through events in the narrative, in part because they must adapt to changes throughout the storyline.
